A Hyatt Hidden Gem: Our Stay at the Thompson Washington D.C.
We recently headed to the nation’s capital for a hockey game and decided to turn it into a mini-vacation. Since we had a Hyatt Category 1-4 Free Night Certificate burning a hole in our pocket, we decided to try a brand-new property and brand for us: the Thompson Washington D.C.
Nestled in the heart of the Navy Yard and just steps from Nationals Baseball Park, this hotel turned out to be a fantastic hidden gem for our family. Here is the breakdown of our experience.
First Impressions & Globalist Perks
The Thompson feels like a boutique hotel, despite having 225 rooms across 11 floors. From the moment we pulled up, the valet and front desk staff were incredibly warm.
As a Hyatt Globalist, the recognition was top-notch. They immediately honored all our perks without us having to ask, including:
- Late Check-out: Proffered for 4:00 PM right away.
- Bottled Water: Already waiting in our room.
- Breakfast & Parking: Both were completely free (a huge savings in DC!).
- Room Upgrade: We were bumped up to a newly renovated room.
The “Mile Minded” Tip: Most Thompson hotels (including this one) charge a mandatory $30 Destination Fee. If you are a Globalist, this fee is waived on both paid and award stays. If you are a non-Globalist, Hyatts typically waives this fee on all-points or free night certificate award bookings.
The Room: Modern, Clean, and Moody
We originally booked a Double Bed room (the standard award availability). After checking in via the app, we noticed we’d been upgraded to one of their newly renovated rooms.
The room was spacious for D.C. standards and featured:
- Two queen beds and a small pull-down desk.
- A dark, modern aesthetic (it’s a bit dark, which is intentional for the Thompson brand design).
- A partitioned bathroom (with extra space).
- Plenty of outlets for chargers and a very cool retro-style alarm clock.
Pro Tip: Watch the elevator keypad! You swipe your keycard outside the elevator, and the screen tells you which car (1, 2, 3, etc.) to board. There are no buttons inside the elevators and we saw a few confused guests wandering into the wrong ones and having to get off on the wrong floor!
Dining: From Crab Dip to Rooftop Views
The area around the Thompson has some food options so you aren’t stuck with only hotel options. However, we arrived late and tired, so we opted to eat on-site. The Thompson offers a few distinct vibes:
The Lobby Bar & Lounge
The lobby features cozy couches and tables alongside a bar area. There isn’t a specific kids’ menu, they did have family-friendly staples like chicken strips and burgers alongside more “adult” food. We highly recommend the crab dip (a hit with the whole family) and the margaritas, which were surprisingly excellent.
The Rooftop Bar
We took the kids up to the rooftop to catch the city views. While children aren’t allowed to sit directly at the bar, they are more than welcome at the indoor/outdoor tables. It was a great spot to grab a drink while the kids enjoyed some juice and the view.
Globalist Breakfast
Since there is no Club Lounge at this hotel, breakfast is served in the main restaurant. On weekends, they serve until 2:00 PM, which is a dream for families who want to sleep in once in a while! We enjoyed:
- Steak and Eggs
- French Toast
- Traditional Eggs and Bacon
The food was high quality, and the service was exceptionally friendly.
Is it Family-Friendly?
The staff was incredibly welcoming to our children, but it’s worth noting the Thompson vibe is definitely geared toward adults, business travelers, and lounging.
It doesn’t have a pool, and the quiet, sophisticated atmosphere might make a high-energy toddler feel a bit out of place. However, for a quick city stay or a sports weekend, it worked perfectly for us. Plus, the Yards Par, and a biking trail are nearby to let the kids burn off some energy.
Considering bringing your pups? The Thompson, like many Hyatts, is pet-friendly. But, as always, we recommend checking the terms and conditions before bringing your furry family members. That said, we were told the hotel bar has a Yappy Hour, on occasion, which can be fun for pet-owners.
The Value Verdict
As of April, 2026, the Thompson Washington D.C. is a Category 4 Hyatt, which makes it an incredible value for a Free Night Certificate. It is also a great points options.
- Point Cost: 12,000 to 18,000 points per night.
- Location: Perfect for Nats games or exploring the Navy Yard. Very close to a Metro stop (Green Line) for more adventures in the city.
- Service: Some of the most attentive staff we’ve encountered in the city.
