A Tale of Two Hyatts: A Family Guide to Hyatt Regency vs. Hyatt Downtown Alberni in Vancouver
Planning an Alaska cruise out of Vancouver, British Columbia? A golden rule of family cruise travel is to arrive at least a day before departure to avoid flight delay disasters. For our recent Alaska sailing, we took it a step further: we flew in a day early and stayed a couple of days post-cruise to explore the city.
This gave us the perfect opportunity to test-drive and compare two prominent downtown properties: the Hyatt Regency Vancouver and the Hyatt Vancouver Downtown Alberni (which is currently transitioning into a Park Hyatt).
Both properties are highly convenient, located downtown, and within walking distance of the cruise port. But how do they stack up for family travel? Let’s dive in.
Hyatt Regency Vancouver (Category 5)
Best for: Practical pre-cruise stays and easy port access.

The Room & Service
We arrived late, but check-in was incredibly fast, and the staff were wonderfully kind. Our room, with two double beds, was comfortable and functional. For families, the small refrigerator and the extra counter space near the bathroom are huge pluses for storing snacks and milk. The bathroom featured a standard shower/tub combo; ideal if you have younger kids who still need baths.
The Food Situation
Because of our late arrival, we headed downstairs to the hotel restaurant, Grain Tasting Bar. While the food was decent, it wasn’t particularly kid-friendly. There was no dedicated kids’ menu, forcing our children to order off the adult menu. Breakfast was a better experience for our kids. The included Globalist breakfast was a buffet that is pretty standard to Hyatt Regency hotels, though larger than some we’ve experienced. The kids loved the muffins and pastries as well as the made-to-order omelets. The big hit was the chocolate banana muffin!
⚠️ Family Tip: The restaurant does not allow children after 10:00 PM. Our food arrived close to the cutoff, and while staff let us finish eating, we definitely felt rushed to get the kids out.
Hyatt Vancouver Downtown Alberni (Category 7)
Best for: Post-cruise luxury, elite status recognition, and top-tier service.

The Red Carpet Arrival
The Alberni is a five-star luxury property currently tracking to become a Park Hyatt, and it shows. The Alberni is one of the tallest buildings in Vancouver and was formerly the Shangri-La hotel prior to transitioning to a Hyatt property in 2025. Despite being in transition, the service is not lacking.
Based on our mobile check-in, the concierge knew exactly who we were the moment we stepped through the door. Even though we arrived at 9:45 AM, they warmly welcomed us and had our room ready within 15 minutes, complete with our bags already heading upstairs with us.
The Suite Life
We redeemed a Suite Upgrade Award for this stay, which secured us a separate bedroom with a king bed and a living room with a pull-out couch for the kids. The massive marble bathroom featured a separate tub and shower, plus high-tech touches like a TV embedded in the bathroom mirror and motorized drapes throughout the room.
The service here truly blew us away:
- Staff offered to make up the kids’ beds immediately upon arrival so we could nap.
- Nightly turndown service included slippers for the whole family and robes (a massive hit with our children).
- On night one, we were surprised with complimentary cookies and bonbons.
The Globalist Breakfast
As a perk of World of Hyatt Globalist status, we received complimentary breakfast for all four of us. The spread included a high-end buffet alongside made-to-order hot items like omelets, Eggs Benedict, and French toast.
While the adults found it delicious, the food was definitely on the sophisticated side and it lacked the standard kid-friendly staples, meaning our kids were a bit less thrilled with the options.
Head-to-Head: Which is Better for Families?
Both hotels boast the amenities you’d expect including pools, spas, and fitness centers, and like most Hyatts, both are pet-friendly.

The Verdict
- Choose the Hyatt Regency if: You want a seamless, lower-cost points stay right before your cruise. The ability to easily walk your luggage right to the ship is a massive logistical win for a family.
- Choose the Hyatt Alberni if: You want to treat your family to a luxury vacation extension. The next-level service, turndown treats, and spacious suites make the post-cruise transition much easier.
We would willingly stay at either hotel again. It really just comes down to how many points you want to spend and whether you’re looking for seamless convenience or five-star pampering!
