Wells Fargo Cards

Unfriendly Changes at Wells Fargo: Is the Two-Player Strategy Dead?

Wells Fargo has recently made some noise in the points and miles space, and unfortunately, it’s not for great reasons. Over the last few years, the bank had been steadily increasing its variety of cash back and Wells Fargo Rewards cards while expanding its list of transfer partners. Things honestly looked to be improving for Wells Fargo in the credit card sphere.

Selena and I hold a bit of a soft spot for Wells Fargo; we actually started this hobby years ago with a Wells Fargo Rewards card! With the positive direction the program was heading, we had hoped to one day move our daily spending back into their ecosystem. Unfortunately, given recent updates, that won’t be happening anytime soon.

Our History: The Classic No-Annual-Fee Setup

From the very beginning, Selena and I have worked as a team to earn and spend points. In the beginning, our strategy relied entirely on two now-discontinued cards: the Wells Fargo American Express Propel and the Wells Fargo Visa Signature Rewards.

  • The Wells Fargo Propel was our daily driver, earning 3x on gas, dining, entertainment, travel, and transit.
  • The Visa Signature Rewards only gave 1x on purchases, but it offered an amazing 50% points bonus when booking airfare through the Wells Fargo portal.

It was a beautifully simple strategy: earn 3x with the Propel, transfer the points to the Visa Signature, and redeem them for 1.5 cents each toward flights. It was a simple, no-annual-fee powerhouse setup.

When the Propel was eventually replaced by the Wells Fargo Autograph, the game stayed the same. The Autograph kept a similar 3x earning structure but added phone plans to the mix. Wells Fargo also added the Wells Fargo Active Cash card offering at least 2x back on all baseline spending.

The Red Flags: Points Sharing Gets Complicated

Our first red flag started when Wells Fargo quietly removed the ability to seamlessly transfer points to another cardholder directly on their website. Suddenly, to share points between our accounts, we had to call in.

Dealing with customer service representatives quickly became hit-or-miss. Sometimes a transfer went smoothly; other times, the rep was completely lost. During one memorable call, a representative used my points to pay down the statement balance on the Visa Signature instead of transferring them to Selena’s account for an airfare booking. To make matters worse, I was told the mistake was irreversible.

That frustrating interaction opened our eyes to the value of other banking ecosystems, and we began migrating our primary spending away from Wells Fargo.

The Short-Lived Golden Era (and the Attune Card)

Despite the clunky phone-transfer system, Wells Fargo spent the last couple of years incrementally improving its program by adding long-awaited airline and hotel transfer partners.

They launched the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey ($95 annual fee), which offers 5x on hotels, 4x on airlines, and 3x on dining. But the card that really caught our eye was the Wells Fargo Attune World Elite Mastercard. With a $0 annual fee, it introduced an incredibly unique 4% cash back (or 4x points) structure on categories you almost never see rewarded on a credit card:

This was a borderline 4x catch all card with $0 annual fee.  We had been seriously considering picking up the Attune card for that 4x pet care category alone. However, in an effort to stay under Chase’s strict 5/24 rule, we put it on the back burner. Sadly, we missed our chance: Wells Fargo completely closed the Attune card to new applicants in June. If you managed to snag it during its short run, we are definitely envious!

The Final Straw: Point Sharing is Ending

While closing the Attune card was disappointing, the real dealbreaker is Wells Fargo’s latest announcement: As of September 25, 2026, they will no longer allow point transfers between different users.

This move follows Citi’s recent decision to cut ThankYou Rewards sharing in May. Unfortunately, by not even allowing transfers between individuals residing in the same household, Wells Fargo has effectively killed the “two-player” strategy for families. This leaves Capital One as the friendliest remaining ecosystem for freely moving points between accounts.

What Is the Mile Minded Family Doing?

We believe the Chase Sapphire Preferred is definitely still worth it, and we aren’t planning any drastic changes to our current lineup. Because we hold both the Sapphire Preferred and Sapphire Reserve in our household, we can seamlessly move points over to the Reserve to keep our 1:1 Hyatt transfers alive.

Our main tactical shift will be moving our family gas spend away from our Wells Fargo Autograph card over to the Sapphire Preferred. We value Chase Ultimate Rewards points significantly more than Wells Fargo Rewards thanks to Chase’s partner network.

When paired with our Bilt Palladium and Sapphire Reserve cards, our multi-card setup sets a powerful earning floor:

  • 8x on travel booked via Chase Travel
  • 4x on direct airline and hotel bookings
  • 3x on Gas, EV Charging, Vacation Rentals, and Dining
  • 2x minimum on all other everyday spending

We also pair these with a no-annual-fee Chase Freedom Flex® to take advantage of its 5x quarterly rotating categories for accelerated earning.
