Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa Review: A Tropical Points Paradise
As committed Hyatt loyalists, we’re always on the hunt for properties that offer exceptional value for our points where our family can have a great adventure, and the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa exceeded all expectations! Our recent points-only stay in November 2025 was made even better by utilizing a Hyatt Guest of Honor award! We earned this in our journey toward Globalist, but we actually achieved Globalist status after this trip so the Guest of Honor award gave us a taste of these perks.
The hotel is located in the southern area of the island, not far from Poipu Beach. The location offers easy access to shopping and dining options as well as beaches and beautiful scenery.
Maximizing Our Points: Cost and Elite Perks
The Grand Hyatt Kauai is a World of Hyatt Category 8 property. For reference, a standard night currently requires between 35,000 (Off-Peak) and 45,000 (Peak) points for a standard room. Using our Guest of Honor award for a points stay provided us with full Globalist benefits, which included:
- Waived Resort Fees: A significant savings at a resort with a $55 daily fee.
- Complimentary Club Access: This included daily breakfast, snacks, and dessert throughout the day. We used the Club for breakfast each morning, which was a huge value for a family of four.
- Preferred Room Upgrade: Which secured us a spacious first-floor room with pool view which meant we could walk out of our room to enter the pool.
- Parking: While parking is not always free for Globalists, we received free self-parking or valet parking, our choice.
Late Checkout Note: A key Globalist benefit is the requested 4:00 PM late checkout. However, as with all Hyatt resorts, this perk is subject to availability. Unfortunately, we were only granted an extra hour. Thankfully, the hotel has a comfortable departure lounge with showers, allowing us to still use the pool all day before heading to the airport for our redeye flight.
Pre-Arrival & Check-In Experience
A few days before our arrival, the hotel manager sent a personal welcome email; a thoughtful touch. This proactive communication allowed us to confirm our Guest of Honor benefits and make special requests ahead of time. The manager responded promptly within a few hours.
Our arrival at the hotel was late, nearly 9 PM, due to a late flight and a delay at the car rental counter. Despite the hour, the lobby staff gave us a warm, traditional Hawaiian welcome, complete with beautiful leis for each of us. Check-in was swift and friendly. Our Globalist-tier upgrade landed us in a first-floor room near the pool, and we were personally escorted to our room. The staff had already placed the requested rollaway bed inside, ensuring a smooth transition after a long travel day.
Accommodations and First Impressions
The room was spacious and comfortable, easily fitting our family of four without feeling cramped. The sleeping arrangements were perfect for our kids: a king bed for us, a sleeper chair bed, and the rollaway, so everyone had their own space. This is a huge win for a family trip!
The large bathroom was a highlight, featuring two sinks, a separate shower area, and a private toilet room. Our first-floor upgraded room featured a small patio with direct access to the pool area. The room was also equipped with essential amenities, including a small fridge and a coffee maker.
That first night, we relied on room service. While the menu online didn’t perfectly match what was offered, and the kids’ menu was quite limited, our youngest was happy with a hot dog. The food was generally just okay, but it served its purpose after a long journey.
One fun perk at this hotel is instead of the free water you typically receive as a Hyatt member, you get a reusable water bottle. They were happy to provide us with one for each person in our room. There were plenty of refill stations around the resort so it was easy to access complimentary water.
The Water Oasis: Pools, Lazy River, Lagoon, and Beach
The Grand Hyatt Kauai’s pool complex is the perfect representation of what you think a Hawaiian resort should be. The sprawling area is beautifully landscaped with palm trees, offering ample shade.
- The Lazy River: This large lazy river gently weaves down a hill, complete with a fun water slide and two little cave grottos that the kids adored visiting on every pass.
- Connecting Pools: The lazy river connects to a main pool area featuring a central hot tub island, volleyball net, and basketball hoop.
- Sand-Bottom Pool: A unique, second saltwater pool offers a relaxing, beach-like experience with a soft sand bottom.
- Hot Tubs: There are three hot tubs available. One of them is on an island within pool.
- Adult-Only Area: There is a smaller, dedicated adult-only pool area for quiet relaxation.
We were impressed by the abundance of seating and umbrellas; we never once had to search for a spot where all four of us could easily relax together. The resort thoughtfully provides complimentary pool towels, sunscreen, and aloe vera for after a long day at the pool.
Beyond the lush pool area, you can easily step onto the adjacent beach. This area offers stunning scenery; we loved sitting on the swings to watch the powerful ocean waves roll in. You’ll also get a clear, unobstructed view of Shipwreck Beach, which you can see from the shore. You can also visit the nearby lookout rock of Shipwreck Beach to view the horizon. A word of caution for families: we advise against swimming here, particularly during the winter months, due to the strong currents and rocky terrain. It’s a perfect place for photos and ocean gazing, but best to keep the swimming confined to the safety of the resort pools.
Dining and Shopping
The pool area features several convenient dining options: Captain’s Bar and Hale Nalu, are the poolside restaurant and bar. There is also a smaller bar near the sand pool. All share the same kitchen and menu, which includes both food and drinks. Attentive staff also circulated to take orders and deliver items directly to our lounge chairs.
The resort grounds are truly expansive, spanning over 50 acres, and host a handful of excellent restaurants:
- Tidepools: We enjoyed a delicious dinner at this unique restaurant, which sits over a koi pond. While the price point was high, even for Hawaii, the quality of the food was superb.
- Stevenson’s Library: We skipped this one as it specializes in sushi, which isn’t a family favorite for us but the atmosphere looked great.
Inside the hotel, several shops offer everything from forgotten sunglasses and resort wear to jewelry and souvenirs. We enjoyed the daily rotation of vendor tables, which allowed us to find some unique items, including a beautiful black pearl necklace and suncatchers for the boys.
There is a spa at the resort. We didn’t use this amenity but did visit. They have a small shop with fitness and athleisure wear. The adjacent fitness center seemed pretty spacious with lots of workout options.
Grand Hyatt Kauai Luau Review
We enjoyed attending the resort’s luau, held on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The ticket price includes a buffet dinner and all drinks, including alcohol. Before the show, we received traditional kukui nut leis and enjoyed some activities tailored for the kids.
The staff were exceptional! They were friendly and dedicated to great service. The show itself was fun! The buffet offered chicken, kalua pork, and steak, along with vegetables, salad, and assorted desserts. While the food was decent, it wasn’t the highlight, and the kids had a harder time finding items they wanted to eat, but there were enough options to keep everyone satisfied.

The Verdict
We absolutely loved our time at the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa! It’s an incredibly family-friendly destination with a great pool area, beautiful grounds, and friendly staff. The convenient location is a bonus. We would wholeheartedly recommend this resort and definitely plan to stay again.
